You can spend the morning sightseeing, stop for lunch, wander through the markets during the afternoon and return after dark when the lights create an entirely different atmosphere.
When should you visit?
Most European Christmas markets begin opening in the second half of November and continue through December. If you want the classic festive experience, December is difficult to beat. The closer you get to Christmas, the more atmospheric the markets can feel. That said, November can be a great option if you want to experience the markets before the busiest festive period. Some destinations continue their celebrations beyond Christmas and into the New Year, giving you even more flexibility.

What should you pack?
European Christmas markets are outdoor experiences, so wrapping up warm is essential.
Temperatures can drop considerably in November and December, particularly after sunset, and some destinations can see snow.
We’d recommend packing:
- Warm layers – thermal tops are particularly useful on colder days.
- A good pair of walking shoes or boots – you’ll probably cover more ground than you expect.
- A warm hat, scarf and gloves – particularly useful once the sun goes down.
- A waterproof jacket – because European winter weather can be unpredictable.
- A comfortable day bag – ideal for carrying your essentials and anything you pick up from the markets.
- Some local currency – although card and contactless payments are widely accepted, some smaller stalls may still prefer cash.
And don’t forget to leave a little room in your suitcase for those Christmas decorations and foodie treats you inevitably end up bringing home.
What will you eat and drink?
One of the best things about Christmas markets is that you can eat your way around them. Every few metres there seems to be another tempting smell coming from a market stall.
Here are some of the treats worth looking out for:
🍷 Glühwein and vin chaud
The ultimate Christmas market drink. Usually served warm and infused with spices such as cinnamon, cloves, star anise and orange, mulled wine is the perfect companion for a chilly evening. In some destinations you can even add a shot of rum or amaretto.
🌭 Bratwurst
Germany is famous for its sausages and Christmas markets are the perfect place to try them. Served hot in a crusty roll with mustard, they make an easy and very satisfying market lunch.
🥔 Potato pancakes
Known as Reibekuchen or Kartoffelpuffer in Germany, these crispy grated potato pancakes are often served with apple compote. They’re simple, delicious and very moreish.
🍪 Lebkuchen
Think traditional German gingerbread with a festive twist. You’ll find beautifully decorated hearts, biscuits and other shapes throughout many Christmas markets.
🌰 Roasted almonds
Follow the smell and you’ll usually find them. Freshly roasted and coated in caramelised sugar, cinnamon and vanilla, they’re one of those Christmas market treats that you’ll probably want to take home with you.
Don’t forget about the Christmas market mug
There’s another little Christmas market tradition worth knowing about. When you order a drink such as Glühwein or hot chocolate, you’ll often pay a small deposit for the mug. The mugs are frequently decorated with that year’s Christmas market design, making them a lovely souvenir.
Return the mug and you’ll receive your deposit back.

🎄 Strasbourg, France
The city that feels made for Christmas
Strasbourg is often referred to as the “Capital of Christmas”, and it’s easy to see why.
The city’s historic centre transforms during the festive season, with beautifully decorated streets, traditional market stalls and spectacular Christmas lights.
The famous Christkindelsmärik dates back to 1570, giving Strasbourg an incredible sense of history as well as plenty of festive atmosphere.
Take a stroll around the cathedral, explore the beautiful streets of the Grande Île and make your way towards Petite France, where canals and timber-framed buildings create one of the most picturesque parts of the city.
And make sure you try some of the local Alsatian specialities while you’re there.
Strasbourg is particularly lovely if you want a Christmas market break that combines history, food, architecture and atmosphere.
🎄 Cologne, Germany
Christmas beneath the cathedral
Cologne offers a completely different experience.
The city has several Christmas markets, meaning you can easily spend a few days exploring different parts of the city.
The most famous sits right beneath the enormous Gothic towers of Cologne Cathedral.
With thousands of lights, a huge Christmas tree and rows of traditional wooden chalets, it’s an impressive sight.
Elsewhere, you’ll find markets with their own themes and characters, including the Heinzelmännchenmarkt in the Old Town.
There’s even an outdoor ice rink, making Cologne a particularly good option for families.
And if you fancy exploring beyond the markets, Cologne’s excellent transport links make it easy to see more of the city.
🎄 Heidelberg, Germany
A more intimate Christmas escape
If huge city markets aren’t quite your thing, Heidelberg could be the answer. Set beside the River Neckar and overlooked by Heidelberg Castle, the city has a wonderfully romantic, storybook feel. The Christmas market winds through the historic pedestrian centre, with stalls appearing across several beautiful squares.
You can browse the market, stop for a warming drink, enjoy some freshly baked waffles and then take the funicular up towards the castle for spectacular views across the city.
For couples looking for something a little more intimate, Heidelberg is a lovely choice.

How easy is it to get to Europe’s Christmas markets from the UK?
One of the reasons European Christmas markets work so well for a short break is that many destinations are easily accessible from the UK.
Depending on where you’re travelling from, you may have direct flights available to cities including:
- Vienna

- Frankfurt

- Strasbourg via nearby airports
You can also travel by rail.

Most markets open in the third or fourth week of November (aligning with the start of Advent) and run through to 23 or 24 December. However, some larger destinations—such as Prague, Budapest, and Berlin—extend their festivities through to New Year’s Eve or the Feast of the Epiphany in early January.
Yes. Christmas markets are exceptionally popular among both international visitors and local domestic travellers. Central, walkable hotels close to the main market squares and peak weekend flights often book out several months ahead. Booking early secures the best accommodation and convenient travel times.
France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland primarily deal in Euros (or Swiss Francs in Switzerland). While card and contactless payments have become widespread since 2020, small stalls selling lower-priced items (such as single drinks or roasted nuts) frequently accept cash only. It is best to carry a modest supply of notes and coins.
Generally yes, though historic town centres frequently feature uneven cobbles, kerbs and crowded thoroughfares during peak evening hours. Visiting between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm on weekdays provides a quieter, more accessible experience with plenty of space to navigate.
For shopping and relaxed browsing, late morning and early afternoon on weekdays are best. For the quintessential festive atmosphere, visit at dusk (around 4:30 pm) when the lights turn on, the crowds gather and the aromas of hot street food fill the air.
